THE ESSENTIAL DON GIOVANNI
The Essential Don Giovanni
A musical journey of seduction, betrayal, villainy and vengeance!
Friday and Saturday, 11-12 November, will see the return of Essential Opera to the British Club, Bangkok. The creative team behind the wildly successful March 2020 production, The Essential Marriage of Figaro, will be returning to the Surawong Room with their staged highlights of Mozart’s masterpiece, Don Giovanni.
For their latest production, the team have collaborated with some of Thailand’s most accomplished and well-known opera singers to recount the outrageous escapades of the infamous libertine, Don Juan, through the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the verse of Lorenzo Da Ponte.
Presented in two acts, with accompanying three course buffet dinner (included in the ticket price), and cash bar, The Essential Don Giovanni promises to be a landmark event in the classical music calendar, appealing to both experienced opera afficionados and casual lovers of music and theatre alike. The performance will be sung in the original Italian, in order to preserve the beauty of Mozart’s vocal lines, but the accompanying English narration, program notes, and dramatic staging promise to bring this dark musical comedy to life for all audience members, regardless of their previous opera experience.
The distinguished cast will be lead by Palang Rocksilp and Pichaya Kemasingki, as Don Giovanni and as his long-suffering man-servant, Leporello. Japanese soprano, Tae Miyata, portrays Donna Elvira, one of Giovanni’s many jilted lovers, and renowned local opera singer Barbara Zion presents Donna Anna, whose ‘seduction’ at the opening of the show goes disastrously wrong, resulting in Giovanni slaying her father, Il Commendatore (John Tneoh), in a dual. Thai tenor, Ohmmapat Kaosam-ang, will sing the part of Anna’s fiancé, Don Ottavio, and Krittathad Pisuttiwong and Kungnang N. Kanokgarnjanar round off the cast as soon-to-be-wed peasant couple, Masetto and Zerlina, who Giovanni – of course – does his best to break up!
